1. Flurry of new music in your pants (and lots of DS music software)

    May 28, 2008 by jef

Holy crazy coders! I’ve seen 3 DS homebrew music apps in just the last week. What is going on? This “cellular automation” app, Glitch DS, seems the wackiest, but the Protein DS app blows my mind for awesomely simple and therefore beautiful UI. Anything with dots rules.

    Glitch DS:

Protein DS (i think the person is filming under a waterfall):

    Protein DS home
    Glitch DS project home
    Bliptracker DS Drum Machine
GrooveStep (posted before but still rad)
DS hardware sequencer w/ all the steps needed for MIDI
DStep DS sequencer (the software used in the above link)
Monome DS (hey! and save $400)
KORG DS-10 (will be released worldwide. hoorah!)

There is something cute about having to load the software from the card and then take the card out to insert your MIDI interface. It reminds me of having to boot from floppys.

  5. Japanese Casual Game Lovin

Ran across a couple interesting games while putting together a deck on casual gaming. The first is You Are Lucky:

it’s all in Japanese, but surprisingly easy to follow.

    Also, Makibishi Comic ,

which is similar to Samorost in it’s visual point and click style.

  6. Super Pii Pii Brothers

Super Pii Pii Brothers at Think Geek.

FYI: THIS IS AN APRIL FOOL’S JOKE!

But at least not a rickroll. Anywho once you click the buy link it comes up with the prank message. Believe you me it’s not a far-fetched game idea and I’m not ashamed in the slightest to say i’d buy 20 copies in a heartbeat. The video is awesome, go checkit!

A pretty good read comparing games on iPhone with DS, PSP and other consoles:

iPhone 2.0 SDK: Video Games to Rival Nintendo DS, Sony PSP

It reveals all the juicy bits on the technical specs of the handhelds and compares strategies with a smattering of history.

  9. Pocket physics

I was talking to Davers about homebrew and had to share this gem:
Pocket Physics for the Nintendo DS

(this guy also wrote the awesome NitroTracker DS).

Originally i became aware of this concept from the MIT Whiteboard Physics demo. So how badass is it to have it in your pocket for some hyper-creative Line Rider-esque (although Line Rider is coming to the DS soon) sketching? Very!

Further reading surfaced an accelerometer card for the DS which is made just for apps like Pocket Physics.

  10. Nintendo actually approves musical instrument for the DS

    March 13, 2008 by jef

Out of pimpin’ control. I don’t know if i am more amazed that Nintendo is admitting there are creative adults that use (ie. have been hacking their own substitutes for ages) the DS for more than games or that a big name like Korg got involved, especially using one of their classic synths: the MS-10. So, whatever, this is what happens with Mothra and Godzilla start dating. This product is interesting because Korg is starting to make their adult things more like toys and Nintendo is trying to make their toys more adult.

From DS Fanboy (who got it from Famitsu).
